Tad Burness, creator of “Auto Album” which ran weekly in the Herald, died of pulmonary heart failure early Monday at his home in Pacific Grove. He was 79.
“He is at peace now,” Sandy Burness said of her husband.
Mr. Burness is best known for his “Auto Album” cartoon panels and books. “Auto Album,” first published June 12, 1966, has been published in four book collections. He has published more than 25 books on subjects ranging from classic cars to homes built in the 1800s.
The first books that Mr. Burness published were “Cars of the Early ”20s” in 1968 and “Cars of the Early ”30s” the next year. He has published Chevy and Ford car spotters guides.
He wrote the feature “Pict-Tours” that ran in the Herald during the late ”80s and early ”90s. “Pict-Tours” showcased houses on the Monterey Peninsula with a brief history of the house and construction type.
Mr. Burness was a member of the Peninsula Baptist Church in Pacific Grove and was church pianist for 15 years. He volunteered at Pacific Grove Convalescent, playing piano for residents, for more than 25 years.
