Karl Pavlovich Bryullov (Charles Bruleau) was born in 1799 in St. Petersburg, Russia to the family of a sculptor. In 1809 Karl Bryullov entered one of the world's best art academies - the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and graduated with the 1st degree diploma and the First Gold Medal.
In 1823, he moved to Italy to continue his career and while there he painted his best-known work of art, the epic "Last Day of Pompeii". This masterpiece brought him an international recognition and fame at the age of 33. During his travels, Karl Bryullov produced numerous portraits, sketches and watercolors. He stayed in Italy for 13 years, working in Milan, Naples and Rome. In Italy, Bryullov created about 120 portraits in various techniques, including the portraits of the Russians residing in Italy, painters, sculptors, writers, and aristocracy.
Italian critics compared Karl Pavlovich Bryullov to the greatest masters of the past, such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Van Dyke.

Karl Pavlovich Bryullov was born on 12th December 1799 in St Petersburg, Russia. His parents were French Huguenots and he held the name Charles Bruleau until 1822. His father Pavel Ivanovich Briullo and his forefathers were all artists and Karl was first taught the craft by his father who was a sculptor, engraver and a member of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.
