She worked as a social worker and community college instructor in Colorado, Louisiana, and Maryland, and she worked for the Wesley Clark presidential campaign after returning to New Hampshire. In 2006, she went from being a liberal public activist to a member of the US House of Representatives, serving from 2007 to 2011, from 2013 to 2015, and from 2017. She retired in 2018.

Carol Shea-Porter (born December 2, 1952) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who is the former member of the United States House of Representatives for New Hampshire's 1st congressional district. She held the seat from 2007 to 2011, 2013 to 2015, and 2017 to 2019.
