Alyce Chavunduka remembered by colleagues in SA

SABC TVs first black news presenter, Alyce Chavunduka, who died this week, has been remembered by colleagues. She has been described by friends as a trailblazer who opened many doors for black people in the South African media industry.
Speaking at her memorial service in Fourways, north of Johannesburg the Zimbabwean born broadcaster was described as a pioneer and an impeccable mentor. Her former colleague at ZBC and current SABC News anchor, Peter Ndoro says Chavundukas ambitious nature was contagious.
“One of the things that really inspired me was when I heard that Alice got a big job in South Africa because suddenly the whole world got bigger for some of us and so much was possible.”
Ndora says Chavunduka paved the way for him in his broadcast career.

She was
Chavunduka died on Sunday in Johannesburg, a week after suffering an epileptic seizure in her home.
She was previously involved in two serious car accidents, one which left her with epilepsy.
Born in Zimbabwe; her father was Professor Gordon Chavunduka who served as vice chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe.
At 23, Chavunduka made television history when she become the first black female news anchor on the SABC's former "white" TV channel, TV1, alongside news readers Jane Hicks and Anand Naidoo.
Her career
In the same year, on 2 January , Chavunduka also became the first black female presenter of the SABC and TV1's then (and only) morning breakfast show, Good Morning South Africa.
It was a meteoric rise for the Zimbabwean girl, who at 12, became that country's youngest presenter ever of children's radio programmes on the Zimbabwean Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). Chavunduka went on to host radio programmes on Zimbabwe's Radio 1 and Radio 3 and by 18 she was a TV news reader in that country.
